Tea lattes have gained popularity in the past few years. Essentially a tea latte is half tea and half frothed milk with your choice of sweetener. Matcha latte, black tea latte, green tea latte, all can be found at most coffee shops. You can choose iced tea lattes on a hot day or even a warm tea latte for a perfect fall drink. Both ways are delicious if you have the right recipe! We personally like to make homemade tea lattes because we know the exact ingredients going in. I’m a big advocate of knowing what’s in my food. Drinks like this, aren’t any different. You’ll find a lot of lattes made by coffee shops are filled with high fructose corn syrup, colorings, and artificial sweeteners. A homemade version of these recipes are not only cost effective but healthier with the right ingredients. Jump to recipe.
My kids like to refer to homemade herbal tea lattes as milk tea. We are huge tea lovers because of all the health benefits. We love herbal teas with out milk too, but we all enjoy delicious tea lattes together as a family. I love that herbs have so many benefits for things like, anxiety, stress, digestive health, lymphatic health, skin health, and even hormonal health. I’ve also found recently that coffee just doesn’t agree with me. I can tolerate it every now and then but having it everyday stresses my adrenals too much. As much as I love coffee, I knew I had to find a tasty alternative. This herbal tea latte really hits the spot when I need a treat. It also doesn’t make me feel jittery and has the added benefits from chamomile, lavender, and calendula. These herbs are all great for the nervous system and help keep me calm throughout the day.
Different Variations For Herbal Tea Lattes
There are so many variations when making a tea latte, In our recipe we’ve chosen raw goat milk, loose leaf herbs such as: chamomile, calendula petals, and lavender. We’ve also done just a straight chamomile tea latte which can be great before bedtime. I personally use honey but you can use your choice of sweetener. Here are a few variations you can try based on what you like best.
Favorite Milk Options:
You cannot go wrong with goat’s milk or cow’s milk. These really give the tea latte the most creamy flavor. When you start using plant-based milk you will get different tastes since they aren’t very thick and don’t always mix in well. If you have a dairy allergy, I would say that almond milk is the most mild tasting.
Whole milk ( we love raw milk since we raise our own goats and cows)
Oat milk
Almond milk
Coconut milk
Different Type Of Herbal Tea Options:
We love Mountain Rose Herbs for all things herbs. They have loose leaf teas and all of the teas we used to make this recipe if you want to mimic ours. Mountain rose herbs have the best tea is your looking for a specific blend. They have hormonal support, digestive support, etc. They also sell french press and different tools to steep loose leaf tea.
Loose leaf tea (we chose chamomile, lavender, and calendula petal)
Peppermint & lemon balm is also another tea blend we will do. It makes a nice minty tea latte with vanilla extract. The lemon balm adds stress relief properties as well!
English breakfast blend
Black tea
Chai tea ( you can purchase a loose tea blend or buy chai tea bags)
Earl Grey
Green tea
Sweetener Options:
We love raw honey for the healthy benefits. But I will say sometimes I love doing maple syrup. I love that maple syrup can be added even if the tea isn’t hot. You can always make a simple syrup with honey if you need to add more sweetness to your drink once the ice is added though! For stevia, use caution, I cannot say how this will come out. Stevia can have a very bitter taste so a very small amount is all it takes.
Raw honey
Maple syrup
Brown sugar
Cane sugar
Stevia
Extra Add-ins
For our tea latte recipe, we chose to add in extra flavors like vanilla extract because it’s delicious in this recipe! Most people will add in cinnamon sticks to their chai latte, not only for the beauty of the drink but for the fragrant aroma and flavor. I’m sure cinnamon would be really good in this recipe as well.
Vanilla extract
Pinch of Cinnamon
Cinnamon sticks
ice cubes

Tips For Getting The Perfect Herbal Tea Latte
Most tea latte recipes will call for half milk and half tea. We personally find that if you make a concentrate of the tea and put a small amount of water in the French press, it will make the tea sort of like an espresso machine would. This will make it to where the latte is not watered down. Some tea-based beverages can taste really strong, bitter, and watery. This all depends on the proper ratios of water to herbs. We like to put so 6-8 ounces of water in the French press. Using 3 oz for each person’s cup and 12-13 oz of milk. This will make 2-3, 16 oz lattes.
If you want a warm latte, heat your milk up before pouring it in the tea. You’ll want to froth the milk before pouring it in as well. This will ensure you get the best “fluffy” milk as my kids like to call it.
Add your sweetener when your tea is hot. Honey will not mix in a cold drink but maple syrup will! With this recipe don’t be afraid to add a little extra honey.
Choose herbs that aren’t super bitter. Chamomile and lavender can be bitter if they are overly used. I did 2 parts calendula and 1 part lavender and chamomile. Herbs like peppermint, lemon balm, spearmint, geranium, cinnamon, and meadowsweet would be great choices. Herbs like dandelion, nettles, goldenseal, wormwood, valerian, and chicory can all be rather bitter so I would stay away from those unless you use a very small amount.

Ingredients
- 3 oz tea concentrate
- 12 oz milk
- 1 1/2 tablespoon raw honey (or sweeten to taste)
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 Tablespoons calendula
- 1 tablespoon chamomile
- 1 tablespoon lavender
Instructions
- Start by putting 2 tablespoons calendula, 1 tablespoon lavender, 1 tablespoon chamomile in your french press
- Bring 6-8 oz of water to a boil
- Pour boiling water into french press
- Let steep for 5-10 minutes- the longer you steep, the stronger it will taste.
- Pour 3 oz of tea in your mug and add honey (or sweetener of choice)
- Froth 12 oz of milk and pour it in your tea.
- Add ice if desired and enjoy!
Notes
If you want a warm latte, heat up your milk before frothing. Once heated, froth and pour into your tea.
If you want a cold latte, pour milk directly into tea and froth after combined.
The tea we are making is a concentrate. This will prevent your latte from being watered down. You can add more water to your french press if you prefer your herbal tea latte not as strong tasting. We found the latte taste much cleaner when we make the concentrate.
