My Story
I’m so excited about this post because me and my husband are in the thick of remineralizing our teeth and reversing cavities naturally. We’ve both had unfortunate situations with our teeth lately and it’s reminded us to kick our behinds in gear. Having healthy teeth is just as important as keeping any other part of the body healthy.
I had a tooth in 2014 that cracked in half and had a standard dentist “repair” the tooth, which covered up the decay. Knowing what I know now, I would have chosen a biological dentist who would have removed the decay from my tooth completely, preserving what they can. They would then take impressions and rebuild the missing part with ceramic instead. This is different from a crown that would cover the whole tooth causing problems in the future. Leaving dead teeth in the mouth is asking for a disaster to happen unfortunately. Your mouth reflects the rest of your body’s health. SO if you’re having constant cavities or issues with a tooth, always check your health because your teeth are connected to nerves in your body which in turn can be a result of an organ not functioning at its full potential due to diet or health issues.
What Is Biological Dentistry
In short, a biological dentist is someone who takes a natural approach to dental care. They choose to look at the person as a whole and treat their mouth the same way. They don’t perform root canals as they are dangerous to the individual getting them done. Biological dentist aren’t quick to do dental fillings rather they encourage you with natural ways to reverse your cavities if they aren’t too far gone. The goal of a biological dentist is to always save a tooth the right way, if it is possible.
They do not recommend the use of fluoride toothpaste or fluoride mouthwash. They also properly remove all mercury fillings from the patient’s mouth and replace it with a safer material. Many mainstream dentists will remove the mercury without any safety precautions, making the patient more susceptible to mercury poisoning. Yikes! Watch this video and see what mercury can do in the mouth!
Biological dentists will use ozone therapy, PFR, and fluoride free methods for treating their patients. To find a biological dentist in your area check out this website.
The tooth that broke in 2014, has recently broke again. Why? Because I did NOT have proper treatment the first time. I saw a biological dentist in my area and she made a plan to remove the part of the tooth that is decayed and replace it with a partial ceramic tooth. So the half that isn’t decayed will stay and the decayed half will finally be extracted out of my mouth after 9 years! I cannot wait to get this done properly!
Diet For Remineralizing The Teeth Naturally
I know I know it doesn’t sound fun but it isn’t forever. There are studies that show a diet low in sugar intake and phytic acids will help increase chances of reversing a cavity. Some food items high in phytic acid are grains, nuts, seeds, and beans. This article from Weston A Price is incredible at describing oral health and how diet affects our teeth greatly. In short here are some things you can incorporate into your diet.
- Grass fed meats
- Bone Broths (high in minerals)
- Pasture raised eggs
- Organ meats
- Good dairy products like raw milk
- Healthy fats (avocados, egg yolks, organic yogurt, grass fed butter)
- Low phytic acid vegetables (leafy greens; broccoli, cauliflower)
In Weston A Price’s article it describes what biological dentistry should look like.
The principles of holistic dentistry, based on the research of Weston Price, are as follows:
https://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/dentistry/guide-to-holistic-dentistry/#gsc.tab=0
- Eat nutrient-dense whole foods, properly grown and prepared.
- Avoid root canals. If you have a root canal and suspect that they are causing trouble, have them removed by a knowledgeable dentist.
- Avoid mercury (amalgam) fillings. If you have amalgam fillings, have them removed by a holistic dentist who specializes in mercury filling replacement.
- Orthodontics should include measures to widen the palate.
- When it is necessary to extract teeth, do so in such a way as to avoid leaving the jaw bone with cavitations, which can be focal points of infection.
Supplements For Remineralizing Teeth Naturally
Supplements are just as important as food while healing. These will be your little helpers in making sure there are no nutritional gaps while healing! We have to make sure to give our body the vitamins and minerals it needs to repair and heal. There are studies that show low vitamin D levels are more susceptible to cavities than those who have adequate amounts of it! You can check out this article about vitamin D. This is a basic list of the main supplements that have been shown to help reverse tooth decay especially in the earliest stages.
- Cod liver oil (vitamin A and D)
- Beef liver and/or organ meats
- Magnesium
- Vitamin D + Vitamin K
- Zinc
- Minerals ( we love Cell Core’s CT Minerals or Humic and fulvic from Mother Earth Labs)
Oral Care Routine For Remineralizing Your Teeth Naturally
I struggled with keeping up with good oral hygiene while I was pregnant and I feel that really affected my teeth. Pregnancy can be so depleting on a mothers teeth so if you’re pregnant talk to your biological dentist about the best oral routine for you! Ever since I started implementing this routine I don’t have nearly as much dental plaque AND I’m starting to see small cavities slowly fade away. My gums are also stronger and don’t bleed when I floss (is that TMI?). My husband has one dental cavity that’s almost completely gone!
It’s always a good idea to use your best judgement when it comes to your teeth. It’s always a great idea to consult with your dentist before trying to fix anything yourself. That way they can track the progress of your teeth while you try to reverse the cavity. A good biological dentist will encourage you to reverse cavity formation with the proper tools and techniques.
Here’s What We Do
- Regular brushing with toothpaste that has hydroxyapatite ( We love Shine from Oral Wellness and Wellnesse. Ora wellness in my opinion has a better formula but it is a powder. Which we don’t mind) Hydroxypapatite is a safe and natural alternative to fluoride. Read about the dangers of fluoride here
- Oil Pulling (You can use coconut oil or ozonated oil. I use both and love them) Swish the oil in your mouth for 20 minutes at a time. We oil pull upwards of around 2-3 times a day. I like to add essential oils to this sometimes like clove oil and oil of oregano because of their anti-bacterial properties.
- Ora Wellness Heal Thy Mouth Blend (we add 3 drops to our oil pulling regimen, it’s great for reversing cavities, gum disease, and getting rid of harmful bacteria)
- Flossing to keep all those tiny food particles out between the teeth. (Ora Wellness has a great floss)
- Brushing properly (Ora Wellness has a great instructional on the proper way to brush for reversing gingivitis)
- Ozone Oil ( You can apply ozonated oil to the teeth you’re trying to heal. I would use Hemp ozonated oil since it’s the strongest.)
- Tongue scraping can help to get the bad oral bacteria out helping with bad breath. It also feels nice and clean after too. Your breath and your spouse will thank you!
Ozone Benefits
If you’ve never heard about the amazing benefits of ozone you can read more about it on this blog post I did. My husband had an abscess and did ozone daily on his tooth along with the information in this blog. After doing it for a few weeks, the abscess went away. We usually do this whole regimen twice a day. If you’re dealing with a tooth that’s hurting I would personally apply ozone oil and oil pull at least 3 times a day to keep the area clean.
Nutritional Support Suggestions From A Biological Dentist
I hope you enjoyed our post of all the basic things you can do to support your oral health. Dr. Evans at Healthier Smiles Dental is the biological dentist we have been working with and he was kind enough to let us share his nutritional support suggestions for his patients. This is for those who want to try things naturally. My husband has used many of the supplements for infection to give him some time until he can see Dr. Evans. They have helped him with the problem tooth from worsening and he has also seen other cavities get smaller with the bone support supplements. Praise the Lord! If you would like to see a full list of supplements for supporting your oral health, subscribe to our newsletter with the form below and receive this free PDF file. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
I know this was not a short answer, but it has made a difference in our family. Even our young children see us daily brushing and oil pulling. They wanted to do it too and we didn’t even have to force them. They even like to use their tongue scraper and we have seen a difference in their baby teeth as well. Untreated cavities are no fun, so i hope this encourages you to stop the development of tooth decay, plaque formation, and put away poor oral hygiene so you can live happier and healthier.
Do you take care of your teeth naturally? I’d love to hear if you knew about biological dentistry before?
